Marc Demuth (Double Bass)
Marc Demuth was born in Luxembourg in 1978.
He started his jazz-studies at the Conservatory of Luxembourg in the Jazz-department by having electric-bass lessons, jazz-ensemble and jazz-theory as well as classical double bass in 1994.
He continued his studies at the Jazz-department of the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles by studying electric-bass with the famous Michel Hatzigeorgiou and the legendary Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, one of the main bassists of Chet Baker. He graduated in 2000 with excellent marks receiving his diplomas (premier prix) in both instruments.
Wanting to pursue his studies in a different country and wanting to meet different teachers he decided to study at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, which is holland’s oldest jazz-department and has one of the best jazz-contrabass classes of the world. Besides his main teacher for jazz-contrabass Hein van de Geyn he also had lessons with Frans van der Hoeven and Ulli Glassmann as well as classical bass as a side subject with Roelof Meijer.
He obtained the Bachelor of Music in 2003 as well as a teacher’s degree in pedagogy and methodology.
He continued his studies in a Master’s degree program having as guest teachers besides Hein van de Geyn as a main teacher, Philippe Catherine and Hans van Osterhout. During this time he also did an exchange program with the Conservatory of Barcelona the ESMUC which made him live in Barcelona for a year to study with two of the most famous bassists in Spain, Mario Rossy and Horacio Fumero.
He obtained his MASTER OF MUSIC degree in July 2006.
During all this study time he was always very active and busy in the jazz-scenes of the different cities he lived in.
In July 1996 he won a scholarship for studying electric bass at the jazz-department of the famous Berklee College of Music while participating at their annual workshop in Perugia, Italy. In December 2000 he accompanied the World Youth Choir on their tour through Benelux, Germany and France and he recorded a CD with them at the end of the tour.
In 2001 he won a prize for the best soloist at the annual Rotary Jazz-competition in Wavre, Belgium.
In 2003 he won the second prize at the Leiden jazz-band competition in Holland with the Joachim Badenhorst trio.
In 2004 he won the first prize as well as the public prize at the prestigious Jazz competition in Avignon in 2004 with the Pascal Schumacher 4tet.
He was selected to represent Luxembourg in the prestigious European Jazz Youth Orchestra Big Band (EJYO) amongst conservatory students of whole Europe for participating in their Europe and Brazil tour in 2004 under the conduction of the Portuguese leader/ composer Pedro Moreira.
He played with the Marc Demuth 4tet feat. Sofia Ribeiro in the House of Luxembourg in New York in march 2005, representing his country for the francophonie festival of New York in 2005.
Since three years he works intensively with the Portuguese singer Sofia Ribeiro in different projects, amongst their duo voice/bass which released its first CD "Dança da Solidão" in 2006. At the same time he works with Sofia by featuring her with his own 4tet with the Luxembourgish vibraphone player Pascal Schumacher, the Belgium clarinet player Joachim Badenhorst and the Belgium drummer Yves Peeters. The first record of the Marc Demuth 4tet, ORIK, was released December 2007 and presented in Portugal and Spain on a tour of the band in January 08.
Alongside his own projects he is also a member in the band conducted by the Luxembourgish singer/songwriter Sascha Ley, a band which recently presented its debut album TRAVELLING LIGHT in many clubs and festivals in Europe as well as in India in November 2007 by performing in NEW DELHI, BOMBAY and PANJIM, GOA.
Besides those activities he is a very active and busy sideman in many different projects and in his recent years he was sharing the stage with many jazz-greats like Michael Brecker, Kenny Werner, Erwin Van, Hein van de Geyn, Florian Weber,Jef Neve, John Ruocco, Guy Cabay, Jacques Pirroton, Phil Abraham, Felix Simtaine and many more.
He is currently based in Luxembourg and he is leading the jazz-department of the Music School of Echternach where he also teaches electric-bass, contrabass and jazz-ensemble.
Marc Demuth (Contrebasse)
Marc Demuth est né au Luxembourg le 1978. Il a commencé ses études de basse électrique et contrebasse dans le département de Jazz du Conservatoire de Luxembourg.
Plus tard il a étudié la basse électrique et contrebasse au département de Jazz du Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles avec les professeurs Michel Hatzigeorgiou et Jean-Louis Rassinfosse.
Après avoir terminé ces études avec un premier prix dans les deux instruments, il a continué ses études en contrebasse jazz au Royal Conservatory of The Hague avec les professeurs Hein van de Geyn et Frans van der Hoeven et en contrebasse classique comme matière complémentaire avec Roelaf Meijer. En 2003 il a obtenu le Diplôme en Musique en Contrebasse Jazz.
De 2003 à 2006 il a continué ses études pour obtenir le Diplôme de Master en Contrebasse Jazz avec les professeurs invités Hein van de Geyn (le professeur principal), Philippe Catherine et Hans van Osterhout. Pendant ces études il s’est rendu à Barcelone pour étudier à l’École Supérieur de Musique de la Catalunya avec une bourse d’études du Programme Sócrates / Erasmus entre 2003 et 2004.
Pendant toute sa période d’études il était extrêmement actif dans les scènes de jazz de ces différents pays .
En hiver 2000 il accompagne le World Youth Choir pour une tournée à travers l’Europe avec enregistrement d’un CD.
En été 2004 il fait partie du European Jazz Youth Orchestra et accompagne ce bigband pour une tournée à travers les pays scandinaves et le Brésil.
Depuis trois ans il travaille intensément avec la chanteuse portugaise Sofia Ribeiro dans différenst projets, dont le duo contrebasse / chant, projet qui a lancé son premier CD "Dança da Solidão". En même temps il travaille sur le projet MARC DEMUTH 4tet feat. Sofia Ribeiro avec le vibraphoniste luxembourgeois Pascal Schumacher, le batteur belge Yves Peeters et le clarinettiste belge Joachim Badenhorst. Le premier disque ORIK était lançé en décembre 2007 et présenté au Portugal et Espagne en janvier 2008 lors d’une grande tournée.
Il fait aussi parti du groupe de la chanteuse de jazz luxembourgeoise Sascha Ley, qui vient de présenter son nouveau CD TRAVELLING LIGHT dans différents festivals et club à travers l’Europe et aussi en Inde en novembre 2007 en jouant sur des festivals de jazz à New Delhi, Mumbai et Panji.
A part ces projets il est extrêmement actif comme ‘sideman’ dans différents projets et il a eu la chance de partager la scène avec des grands noms dans le monde du jazz comme Michael Brecker, Kenny Werner, Erwin Van, Hein van de Geyn, Florian Weber, Jef Neve, John Ruocco, Guy Cabay, Jacques Pirroton, Phil Abraham, Felix Simtaine et beaucoup d’autres.
Actuellement il vit à Luxembourg et il dirige le département de jazz à l’école de musique d’Echternach où il enseigne la contrebasse-jazz, la basse électrique et dirige quelques combos de jazz.
